Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula for mixing
  • Wax paper or a non-stick baking sheet
  • Refrigerator

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds unsalted
  • 1 tbsp sunflower seeds unsalted
  • 1/2 tbsp flaxseeds
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1/4 tsp honey as a natural binder; use sparingly
  • A few drops of water if needed to help the mixture stick together

Instructions

  • Mix the Seeds: In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. Give them a good stir to ensure they're evenly mixed.
  • Bind the Mixture: Add the honey to the seed mix. Stir thoroughly until all the ingredients are lightly coated with honey. If the mixture feels too dry and doesn't stick together when pressed, add a few drops of water – but be careful not to make it too wet.
  • Form the Clusters: Take small amounts of the mixture and press them firmly between your fingers to form little clusters. Each cluster should be small enough to fit comfortably in your hamster's cheek pouches.
  • Set the Clusters: Place the formed clusters on a sheet of wax paper or a non-stick baking sheet. They should not touch each other to prevent sticking together.
  • Chill to Set: Transfer the baking sheet into the refrigerator and let the clusters set for at least 1 hour. This step is crucial to harden the clusters and make them easy for your hamster to handle and nibble on.
  • Serving Time: Once set, the Cheeky Seed Clusters are ready to be served! Offer them to your hamster as a treat. Remember, treats should only make up a small portion of your hamster's diet, so feed sparingly.
  • Storage: Store any leftover clusters in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Make sure they're kept cool to maintain their shape and freshness.
