Cook the Quinoa. If you haven't already, cook the quinoa according to the package instructions. Use just enough water to keep it fluffy, not mushy. Once cooked, let it cool completely. You can even make a bit extra for your lunch while you're at it—quinoa is good for everyone!
Mix the Dry Ingredients. In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, chia seeds (if using), and finely chopped sunflower seeds. These ingredients add texture and a bit of healthy fat, perfect for a well-rounded treat.
Add the Veggies and Quinoa. Add the cooked and cooled quinoa to the bowl along with the grated carrot or zucchini. These veggies not only add a hint of sweetness but also provide a bit of moisture to help bind the Qrispies together. Give everything a good stir to combine.
Moisten the Mixture. Add the coconut oil (if using) and water to the mixture. Stir until it starts to stick together. You want the mixture to hold its shape when you press it between your fingers. If it feels too dry, add a tiny bit more water—just a teaspoon at a time.
Form the Qrispies. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a spoon or a small cookie scoop, form small, bite-sized balls or clusters with the mixture. Place them on the baking sheet, leaving a bit of space in between. You can gently press them down with the back of the spoon to flatten them slightly if you prefer a crispier texture.
Bake the Qrispies. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Bake the Qrispies for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden and crisp. Keep an eye on them toward the end of the baking time to make sure they don't burn. They should be firm to the touch when done.
Cool Completely. Once baked, remove the Qrispies from the oven and let them cool completely on the baking sheet. They will crisp up even more as they cool, giving your hamster that delightful crunch they adore
Store and Serve. Store Critter's Quinoa Qrispies in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Serve them sparingly, just a couple of Qrispies at a time, to give your hamster a healthy treat without spoiling their dinner.
