Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wax paper or non-stick surface
  • Fork for mashing

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed make sure it's fresh to avoid rancidity
  • 1 tbsp rolled oats finely ground
  • 1/4 ripe banana a natural binder full of potassium
  • 1/2 tsp unsweetened applesauce for a bit of moisture and sweetness

Instructions

  • Mash the Banana: Begin by peeling the ripe banana and mashing it in your mixing bowl. You want it to be as smooth as possible to create a good binding base for your treats.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: Add the ground flaxseed and finely ground rolled oats to the mashed banana. Flaxseed is not only nutritious, but it also gives these treats a nice, crunchy texture.
  • Add Applesauce: Spoon in the unsweetened applesauce to the mixture. This will add a touch of sweetness without the need for sugar and help bind everything together.
  • Combine Thoroughly: Mix all the ingredients until you have a homogenous mixture. It should be sticky but still firm enough to hold its shape.
  • Shape the Treats: Take small amounts of the mixture and roll them into little balls, suitable for your hamster to hold and chew on. You can also press them into tiny bar shapes if preferred.
  • Set the Treats: Place the treats on wax paper or a non-stick surface. They will firm up a bit as they stand, making them less sticky and easier for your hamster to handle.
  • Serve with Care: Offer a Flaxseed Feast Treat to your hamster. Remember, treats should only make up a small portion of your hamster's diet, so one treat per day is plenty.

Notes

Always introduce new foods to your pet slowly to make sure they don't have any adverse reactions. And keep an eye on the treats' freshness; since these are made with ripe banana, they're best served within a day or two. For longer storage, keep them refrigerated and use them within a week. Enjoy the feast, little ones!
