Equipment

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Fork or small whisk
  • Mini muffin tin or small baking sheet
  • Parchment paper (if using a baking sheet)
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oat flour or finely ground oats if you don’t have oat flour
  • 1/2 tbsp ground flaxseed rich in fiber and omega-3s, perfect for that hamster coat shine
  • 1/2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce adds natural sweetness and moisture
  • 1/2 tbsp water just enough to help the ingredients come together
  • 1/8 tsp baking powder just a pinch to make the flapjacks puff up a bit
  • A dash of cinnamon for flavor – just a tiny pinch is safe and adds a lovely aroma
  • A few finely chopped sunflower seed if you’re feeling fancy, but don’t overdo it; they’re fatty!

Instructions

  • Preheat Your Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s ready when you are. If using a mini muffin tin, give it a light spray with non-stick cooking spray, or line a small baking sheet with parchment paper if you're shaping the flapjacks by hand.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the oat flour, ground flaxseed, and baking powder. If you’re adding a pinch of cinnamon, toss that in now too. Stir with a fork to get everything evenly mixed.
  • Add the Wet Ingredients: Add the unsweetened applesauce and water to the dry ingredients. Stir gently until everything is just combined. You should have a slightly thick, spoonable batter.
  • Portion the Batter: If using a mini muffin tin, spoon a small amount of batter into each well – about 1/2 teaspoon per flapjack. If you’re using a baking sheet, drop small spoonfuls of batter onto the parchment paper, and gently shape them into little rounds, about the size of a coin.
  • Bake to Perfection: Pop your flapjacks in the oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until they’re lightly golden and firm to the touch. Be careful not to overbake – you want them soft, not crunchy.
  • Cool Completely: Remove the flapjacks from the oven and let them cool in the tin or on the sheet. Once they’re at room temperature, they’re ready for your little fluffster to enjoy!
  • Serve and Store: Give one flapjack as a treat and watch your hamster nibble away with glee! Store any extras in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze them to keep fresh for up to a month. (Remember, these are treats – just one every few days is plenty!)
