Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Small silicone molds or ice cube tray
  • Refrigerator

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/2 tsp unflavored gelatin powder
  • 1/4 cup hamster-safe fruit juice like apple or pear
  • 1 tbsp finely diced hamster-safe fruits apple, pear, or melon
  • A few fresh mint leaves optional

Instructions

  • Gelatin Preparation: In your small saucepan, sprinkle the gelatin powder over the cold water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to "bloom." This step is crucial for achieving the right texture in your gelatin.
  • Heat It Up: Gently heat the bloomed gelatin on low heat, stirring constantly until the gelatin dissolves. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Avoid boiling to maintain the nutritional integrity of the gelatin
  • Add the Juice: Once the gelatin has dissolved, remove the saucepan from the heat and slowly stir in the fruit juice. Mix thoroughly to ensure the liquid is well combined with the gelatin.
  • Fruit Mix-In: Add the finely diced fruits to the gelatin mixture and stir gently. If you're using mint, tear the leaves and add them to the mix for a hint of freshness.
  • Pour into Molds: Carefully pour the mixture into the small silicone molds or an ice cube tray. If you don't have molds, you can simply pour the mixture into a shallow dish and cut it into small, hamster-sized portions once set.
  • Refrigeration Time: Place the molds or tray into the refrigerator and let the gelatin set. This will take at least 3-4 hours, but it can be left overnight if more convenient.
  • Serving Your Hamster: Once the gelatin has set and is firm to the touch, pop the gelatin treats out of the molds. Serve one small cube to your hamster.
  • Storing Extras: Store any uneaten gelatin treats in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Ensure that you only serve these treats in moderation due to the fruit sugar content.

Notes

Always introduce new foods and treats slowly into your hamster's diet. While gelatin and the fruits used are safe for hamsters, their stomachs need time to adjust to new treats. Keep an eye on your furry friend to ensure they enjoy their new gelatin treats without any digestive issues. Enjoy, my little whisker-twitchers!
