Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Food processor or blender
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Small spoon or spatula
  • Knife or small cutter

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup dried figs chopped, stems removed
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats ground into a coarse flour
  • 2 tbsp plain applesauce unsweetened, no added sugar
  • 1 tbsp shredded carrot finely grated
  • 1 tbsp mixed seeds sunflower, sesame, or chia
  • 1 tbsp water optional, to adjust consistency
  • 1 tsp ground flaxseed optional, for added fiber

Instructions

  • Preheat and Prep:Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Prepare the Fig Mixture:Place the chopped dried figs into a food processor or blender along with the applesauce. Blend until a thick, sticky paste forms. If it’s too thick or the blades are having trouble, add a teaspoon of water to help it along. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl.
  • Add the Dry Ingredients:Add the ground oats, shredded carrot, mixed seeds, and ground flaxseed (if using) to the fig paste. Mix everything together until well combined. The mixture should be sticky but workable. If it’s too dry, add a few drops of water; if it’s too wet, sprinkle in a bit more ground oats.
  • Shape into Fingers:Scoop a small amount of the mixture (about a tablespoon) and roll it between your hands to form a long, thin stick or “finger” shape. If the mixture sticks to your hands, dampen them slightly with water to make shaping easier. Continue until you’ve used up all the mixture.
  • Arrange and Bake:Place each fig finger onto the parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving a bit of space between them. Pop the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the fingers are firm to the touch and slightly golden at the edges.
  • Cool Completely:Remove the fig fingers from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. As they cool, they’ll firm up even more, giving your hamster that perfect chewy texture!
  • Serve and Store:Once cooled, offer one finger to your hamster and watch their excitement as they nibble away. Store the rest in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze them for up to a month—just thaw a stick before serving.
