Equipment

  • A small mixing bowl
  • A teaspoon or mini spatula
  • Clean scissors or herb shears
  • A clean cutting board (for chopping veggies)
  • A small plate or tray

Ingredients

Fresh Herbs:

  • 1 small sprig of parsley ich in vitamin C and a hamster favorite
  • 1 small sprig of dill helps with digestion
  • 2 fresh mint leaves optional, for a refreshing twist

Vegetables:

  • 1 tbsp grated carrot for sweetness and crunch
  • 1 tsp finely chopped cucumber hydrating and gentle on tummies
  • 1 tsp finely chopped zucchini low-calorie and hamster-approved!

Seeds and Other Bits:

  • 1/2 tsp flaxseeds packed with omega-3s for a shiny coat!
  • 1/2 tsp chia seeds for added fiber and nutrition
  • 1/2 tsp sunflower seeds unsalted and shelled, as a tasty topper

Binder (Optional):

  • 1/4 tsp unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana f you want the heaps to stick together in little clumps!

Instructions

  • Prepare the Herbs: Rinse your herbs gently under cool water to remove any dirt or pesticides. Pat them dry with a paper towel and use scissors or herb shears to chop them into tiny, hamster-bite-sized pieces.
  • Chop the Veggies: Using your clean cutting board, finely chop the carrot, cucumber, and zucchini into tiny hamster-friendly bits. Hamsters are nibblers, so we want everything to be nice and small for their little mouths.
  • Mix the Ingredients: In a small mixing bowl, combine the chopped herbs and veggies. Add the flaxseeds, chia seeds, and sunflower seeds, mixing everything together evenly. (If you want to make sticky heaps, now’s the time to add a tiny dab of applesauce or mashed banana as a binder!)
  • Form Tiny Heaps: Use your hands or a teaspoon to gently shape the mixture into tiny heaps or clusters, about the size of a marble. If you’re using the binder, the heaps will hold together nicely. Without the binder, you can just pile the mix onto a small plate or tray for foraging fun.
  • Serve with Love:Place a heap (or two!) in your hamster’s enclosure. Watch their little noses wiggle with excitement as they forage through the herbs, seeds, and veggies. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
