Equipment

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Teaspoon
  • Small saucepan
  • Cutting board
  • Paring knife
  • Rolling Pin

Ingredients

  • 3-4 Fresh pea pods unshelled, make sure they’re organic and washed
  • 1 tbsp grated carrot finely grated for tiny paws
  • 1 tbsp cooked oats or quinoa fiber-rich and adds a soft texture
  • 1 tsp chopped apple finely chopped, without seeds
  • 1 tsp chopped cucumber for a refreshing crunch
  • 0.5 tsp ground flaxseeds great for their coat and skin
  • A pinch of crushed pumpkin seeds for a bit of healthy fat
  • A sprig of fresh parsley or dill optional, for flavor and digestion

Instructions

  • Prepare the Pea Pods:Start by rinsing your fresh pea pods and patting them dry. Gently open them along the seam without splitting them completely in half. You want them to act like little pockets! If they’re a bit stiff, you can lightly roll them flat using a rolling pin to make them easier to work with.
  • Cook the Grains (Optional):If you're using cooked oats or quinoa, prepare a small portion according to the package directions. Let it cool completely before adding it to your filling. We don’t want any warm food for our little ones!
  • Mix the Filling:In a small mixing bowl, combine the grated carrot, cooked oats or quinoa, chopped apple, cucumber, ground flaxseeds, and crushed pumpkin seeds. You’ll have a lovely mix of crunchy and soft textures that hamsters adore! Mix well so that all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • Fill the Pea Pods:Take a teaspoon of your filling and gently stuff it inside each pea pod. You don’t want to overfill—just enough for the pod to close easily and hold its shape. If the pod is a bit fussy, you can use a toothpick (carefully) to keep it closed until snack time.
  • Optional Chilling:For a refreshing treat, you can pop the stuffed pea pods into the fridge for about 10-15 minutes. This will make the pea pods slightly crispier and add an extra cooling crunch that your hamster will enjoy—perfect for warmer days!
  • Serve and Watch the Fun!Offer one of the pea pod pockets to your hamster and watch those tiny paws get busy with joy! These little pockets can be served as an occasional treat, so be sure to monitor portions—one pea pod pocket at a time is more than enough for your furry friend.
  • Storage:You can store leftover pockets in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Just be sure to take them out a bit before serving so they’re not too cold for your hamster’s teeth.
