Equipment

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Teaspoon
  • Rolling Pin
  • Small baking sheet
  • Small pan

Ingredients

  • 4-6 fresh Red Clover leaves for rolling up the filling
  • 1 tbsp grated carrot finely grated, easy for nibbling
  • 1 tbsp cooked quinoa optional, provides fiber and protein
  • 1 tsp ground flaxseeds rich in Omega-3 for their coats
  • 1 tbsp chopped apple small bits, use hamster-safe apples like Gala or Fuji
  • fresh parsley great for digestion!
  • A pinch of crushed sunflower seeds unsalted, shelled
  • 1 tsp oat flakes for a bit of crunch

Instructions

  • Prepare Your Red Clover Leaves:Start by rinsing your fresh red clover leaves gently under cool water. Pat them dry with a soft towel. If you want your clover leaves more pliable for rolling, you can give them a gentle flattening with a rolling pin to make them easier to work with.
  • Cook the Quinoa (Optional):If you're using quinoa, cook a tiny amount (hamsters don’t need much) in water according to package instructions. Let it cool completely before adding it to the filling.
  • Mix the Filling:In a small mixing bowl, combine the grated carrot, cooled quinoa (if using), ground flaxseeds, chopped apple, parsley, and sunflower seeds. Mix until everything is well combined and looking like a mini veggie feast! You should aim for a sticky mixture that holds together when pinched, making it easier to roll into the leaves.
  • Assemble the Roulades:Lay each red clover leaf flat. Place about a teaspoon of the filling in the center of the leaf. Gently fold in the sides and roll it up like a mini burrito, tucking the filling securely inside. If the leaves are tricky, you can use a toothpick (carefully) to hold them together until snack time.
  • Optional Baking for Crunch:If your hamster loves a bit of extra crunch, place the rolled-up clover bundles on a small baking sheet and pop them in the oven at a very low temperature (around 200°F/90°C) for about 5-7 minutes. This will crisp up the leaves slightly, but make sure you don’t bake them too long—hamsters do love their fresh greens too!
  • Serve and Watch the Whisker Wriggles:Once cooled (if you baked them), offer the roulade to your hamster and watch those tiny paws get busy! Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
