Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Small mixing spoon
  • Pastry cutter or fork

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp oat flour you can make this by grinding oats
  • 1 btsp ground flaxseed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted sunflower seeds chopped
  • 1 tbsp grated carrot
  • 1 tbsp apple finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp olive oil

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This will ensure our little scones bake evenly and don’t stick.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, oat flour, and ground flaxseed. Stir until well mixed. This forms the nutritious base of our scones.
  • Add Sunflower Seeds and Veggies: Stir in the chopped sunflower seeds, grated carrot, and chopped apple. These ingredients add flavor, crunch, and essential nutrients.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix together the plain Greek yogurt, water, and olive oil. The yogurt adds protein and calcium, while the olive oil provides healthy fats.
  • Form the Dough: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms. If the mixture is too dry, add a bit more water, one teaspoon at a time, until it comes together.
  • Shape the Scones: Using your hands or a small spoon, form the dough into small, bite-sized scones and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Flatten each scone slightly with the back of a spoon or your fingers.
  • Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are firm and slightly golden. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
  • Cool and Serve: Remove the scones from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, they’re ready to be served to your hamster. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week.
