Equipment

  • Small pot
  • Steamer basket optional
  • Fork or potato masher
  • Measuring spoons
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped carrots
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped broccoli florets
  • 1/4 cup shelled fresh peas
  • Water for steaming
  • A sprinkle of finely chopped kale optional for an extra nutrient boost

Instructions

  • Veggie Prep: Begin by thoroughly washing all the vegetables. Chop the carrots and broccoli into fine pieces to ensure they're a suitable size for your hamster to eat safely.
  • Steam the Vegetables: Place the carrots, broccoli, and peas in a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water. Steam them until they're soft, which should take about 5 minutes. If you don't have a steamer, you can boil the veggies in a small amount of water until tender.
  • Cooling Time: Once the vegetables are steamed, remove them from the heat and let them cool down completely. This is important to ensure that you don't accidentally burn your hamster's sensitive mouth.
  • Mash It Up: Using a fork or potato masher, gently mash the steamed vegetables. They should be easy to mash into a soft, palatable mash for your hamster.
  • Add the Kale: If you're using kale, now's the time to sprinkle it over the mashed veggies and mix it through. The kale will not only add a splash of color but also a boost of vitamins.
  • Serve a Spoonful: Once the mash is at room temperature, you can serve a small spoonful to your hamster. Remember that while veggies are healthy, they should be given in moderation to prevent digestive upset.
  • Store Any Extras: If there's leftover mash, you can store it in the fridge for up to two days in an airtight container. Make sure to warm it to room temperature before serving it again.

Notes

Always introduce new foods into your hamster's diet gradually to monitor for any allergic reactions or digestive issues. And, my darlings, always provide fresh water to help your little friends wash down their delicious meal. Enjoy the feast!
