Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Fork or spoon for mixing
  • Small square dish or mold
  • Refrigerator
  • Knife for adult use only

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp hulled sunflower seeds unsalted
  • 1 tbsp hulled pumpkin seeds unsalted
  • 1 tsp crushed walnuts unsalted and in very small pieces
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 tsp honey as a natural sweetener and binder
  • 1/4 tsp water if needed to help binding

Instructions

  • Seed and Nut Mix: In your mixing bowl, combine the sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, crushed walnuts, and shredded coconut.
  • Sweet Binding: Drizzle the honey over the seed and nut mixture. If the honey is too thick, gently warm it in a warm water bath to make it easier to mix. Stir the mixture thoroughly to coat all the ingredients. If the mixture is too crumbly, add a tiny bit of water to help the ingredients stick together.
  • Press into Shape: Transfer the sticky seed and nut mixture into your small dish or mold. Press it down firmly with the back of a spoon or your fingers to compact the mix into a dense bar shape.
  • Set to Perfection: Place the dish in the refrigerator and let the mixture set for about 30 minutes. This will harden the honey, holding the seeds and nuts together.
  • Ready to Serve: Once the mixture is firm, take it out of the fridge and cut it into small, hamster-sized bars that are easy for your pet to hold and chew.
  • Feeding Time: Offer a small piece of the bar to your hamster as a treat. Remember that nuts and seeds are high in fat, so these bars should be given sparingly and not as a regular part of their diet.

Notes

Always supervise your hamster when introducing a new treat, and ensure they have plenty of water available to aid in digestion. It's important to remember that treats should make up a very small portion of your hamster's overall diet. Enjoy the sight of your little buddy munching happily on these homemade delights!
